What year did you graduate and from what campus?
I graduated from the South Campus in 1995.
Why did you choose a career in cosmetology and why GJA?
I was interested in doing something creative and artistic vs. a traditional office job. I also wanted to be in a fun and creative atmosphere. I chose Gene Juarez Academy due to the reputation and their name recognition in the industry.
What are you currently doing and what other industry related experience do you have other than your current position?
I am currently the Director of Educator Development at GJA where I teach a portion of our Instructor Training program along with Cosmetology program classes and help to on-board new educators to the GJA team. Over the years, I have held a variety of positions with Gene Juarez and prior to becoming an educator, I worked as an independent artist.
How did your training with GJA prepare you for the industry and the work you are currently doing?
I have learned just about everything I know from my Gene Juarez education, additional training at the previous GJ Advanced Training Salon and interning at the Gene Juarez Men’s Salon in Bellevue. I have also attended a number of classes with speakers on facilitating classes and educating students.
What do you enjoy the most about your current position? What is your typical day like?
I love spending time with the students working on guests and watching them accomplish new things. My day begins and ends with students discussing art, fashion, hair and beauty.
What is your fondest memory of GJA?
Having lunch with Gene Juarez himself discussing the impact of one’s attitude towards teaching others and their ability to learn.
What advice do you have for current students starting out in the program, and those getting ready to graduate?
My advice for both current students and those getting ready to graduate is that this industry will reward hard work. The more you put into it, the more you will receive in return.
What advice do you have for people that are interested in going to cosmetology school?
If you love it, do it!
