What year did you graduate and from what campus?
I graduated in 2008 from the Federal Way campus
Why did you choose a career in cosmetology and why GJA?
I love working with people and I love everything about the beauty industry. I chose Gene Juarez because when I walked in the school for the first time, I felt a sense of purpose. Everyone was welcoming, beautiful and they seemed really happy. It was something I knew I wanted to be a part of.
What are you currently doing and what other industry related experience do you have other than your current position?
I am an educator at the North campus where I teach the upcoming grad students and help prepare them to take their State Board exams so they can receive their Cosmetology license and get placed in a salon. I’ve worked in salon where I was successful but decided to rejoin GJA because I missed teaching so much!
How did your training with GJA prepare you for the industry and the work you are currently doing?
GJA not only taught me how to do great hair, they also taught me how to be an instructor. They have built me up in so many ways. The confidence and knowledge that I’ve gained from GJA will be used everyday for the rest of my life.
What do you enjoy the most about your current position? What is your typical day like?
The best part of being an instructor is walking up to a guest after my student has made their hair look beautiful and listen to them tell me how happy they feel & how great they look. And when my students are proud of their work, I too, feel proud.
My typical day starts with a meeting with my co-workers to discuss the goals & areas of focus for the day. I then join my students at 8 am to teach them something new or review important information recently covered in the previous class. The majority of my day is spent on our clinic floor working with my students and their guests on every service to ensure they are receiving the necessary support to achieve what their guest wants and to learn from every experience. Most importantly, I let my students know how amazing they are to build their confidence the way my instructors were with me. Overall, my days are long, busy and eventful.
What is your fondest memory of GJA?
My fondest memory of GJA was being a student a month away from graduating. I was at my station foiling a request guest’s hair when I realized this is what I’m supposed to be doing and that I was right where I wanted to be.
What advice do you have for current students starting out in the program, and those getting ready to graduate?
Students who are just starting in the program really need to attend school everyday otherwise they miss out on so much. When students are getting ready to graduate, I tell them to choose their salon home wisely because their future depends on it!
What advice do you have for people that are interested in going to cosmetology school?
If your life is missing something and you think it might be a new career path and you enjoy being around people, then GO FOR IT!
